Dsenyo (dee-SEN-yo) is giving a hand up to women and artisans working their way out of poverty in Malawi. Dsenyo produce a range of contemporary handbags, accessories and home decor celebrating African textile design. The crescent hobo bag fits comfortably under your arm with room for all the necessities and more. Features a sturdy 1.5” wide strap, zipper closure, two interior open pockets and one interior zipper pocket. Brilliant magenta pink with complimentary yellow floral pattern. Each bag is unique and made from African wax-print textile with a organic cotton and hemp lining. Textile placement will vary.
After living and working in Malawi, artist Marissa Perry Saints founded Dsenyo in an effort to create opportunity for hard-working, African women and artisans. Dsenyo is the result of taking African inspiration and combining it with Marissa's experience in design and international development. Dsenyo works with several sewing cooperatives in Malawi, including Sambah Natural in Zambia and are expanding production in Africa. They follow Fair Trade principles working to create maximum benefit for the women, artisans and communities in which they work.
Dsenyo makes every effort to use low-impact dyes and sustainable fibers like jute, hemp and organic cotton where possible. They reduce waste by composting organic scrap material, and they re-purpose textile remnants for use in other products. Their “Old for New” recycling program allows you to send back your used Dsenyo bag and receive a 10% discount on your next purchase. They will reuse, recycle and compost materials in the old purse.
In addition to creating jobs, Dsenyo donates a portion of their profits to community development projects in Malawi, and they have developed partnerships with various nonprofits to help them raise money for their causes.
